The noThrow Story: From Scrapyard to Studio
It all started with an old crane hook rescued from a scrapyard. I was drawn to its rusted, functional durability. For a year, that hook hung on my bedroom wall as simple decoration, until I realised it was more than that. My sketchbooks began to fill, a workshop slowly took over my bedroom, and that single rusted object eventually matured into grpl and hook100—the first two pieces that defined our DNA.
The Experimental Laboratory
That scrapyard find sparked a fixation on the “overlooked.” Soon, everyday objects were being reimagined as odd prototypes made from obscure, reclaimed materials. I found myself exploring furniture design from a gritty, ecological, and highly experimental perspective.
This was a period of blurring the lines between art and utility. Pieces like the Inkuku Chair—assembled entirely from reclaimed plastic shopping bags—and the Fruity Lamp, built from rebar and recycled fruit crates, were examples of explorations into the limits of waste, function and form.
Domesticating the Wild
I was on a journey, and quite frankly, having too much fun to slow down for the sake of “practicality.” But as with all true journeys, the scenery eventually changed. noThrow Design came into focus as a way to domesticate those wild explorations.
We realised that for sustainability to truly impact the world, it had to be accessible, functional and have a honest aesthetic. We took the essence of those early experiments and refined them into a collection designed for the modern, conscious home.
The noThrow Collection Today
Today, noThrow Design is a mature studio where sustainability is built in as standard, not added as an afterthought. Our collection—is designed in the heart of Barcelona and batch-produced within the EU to ensure ethical craftsmanship and a low carbon footprint.
We still see the potential in the “rusted hook,” but today we use that inspiration to create pieces that are built to last a lifetime, and never be thrown away.
